Student recyclers in the Antelope Valley spent over three weeks in April and May collecting aluminum cans as participants in the 2006 Total Trash Out contest. The annual school recycling contest sponsored by Waste Management has raised in excess of $365,000 over the past fifteen years for local AV schools!

This year, forty-four Antelope Valley-area primary and middle schools participated during the contest’s three-week run between April and May. The winning schools were recognized at an awards ceremony on May 30th at Palmdale’s Larry Chimbole Cultural Center, where prizes were awarded. This year’s winning schools included Valley View Elementary and Accelerated Learning Academy. Students at Valley View won the prize for recycling the most cans total (2,371 lbs of cans), while students at Accelerated Learning Academy recycled the greatest number of cans per student (18.30 cans per student).

This year’s Total Trash Out contest marks a major milestone. Since TTO began in 1991, participating schools have collected over 320,650 pounds of aluminum cans in the Antelope Valley and earned over $365,000 for enrichment programs. Waste Management and several local businesses throughout the Antelope Valley sponsor total Trash Out. Co-sponsor Alameda Metals donated an extra $ .10 on top of the standard California CRV per pound of aluminum cans of $1.25 to raise students' take to $1.35 per pound.

Schools have used contest earnings in the past to pay for school supplies, playground equipment and school equipment such as copiers. Some proceeds have also gone to PTA funds to support programs throughout the school year.

The two winning schools received numerous prizes, including the grand prize of a new computer and printer, and a carnival party with desserts, a petting zoo, pony rides, an air castle and live music. Additionally, the winning classroom from the second place school won a field trip to the Mulligan Family Fun Center, and two students from that classroom caught a ride there in a limousine! Jethawk tickets and trading cards were awarded for third place and TTO T-shirts were awarded to the fourth place winners.
