El Sobrante Landfill is a Class 3 regional disposal facility permitted to accept up to 10,000 tons per day, seven days per week. It employs approximately 40 full-time employees. Landfill operations are overseen by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health.
Landfill supervisor and Army Reserve Sergeant First Class Dave Hillyer is leaving shortly for a second tour of duty in Iraq. Dave joined El Sobrante in 2001 — shortly after serving 14-and-a-half years on active duty — and has been in the Army Reserves since then.

From 2003 to 2004, Dave was deployed for a 15-month tour of duty with the 1498th Transportation Company, as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit helped move equipment and supplies from ports to areas of operation all over Iraq and played a crucial role in supporting Coalition forces. While in Iraq, Dave witnessed many life-changing events for the Iraqi people. He observed Iraqi women voting for the first time. He also helped improved the quality of life for many of the Iraqi people by assisting with the opening of new schools, transporting donated supplies into towns and, removing artillery, ammunition and heavy equipment left by Iraqi forces in various towns.

Dave’s wife, Kathy, and one-year-old daughter Madeleine Grace will stay behind in the Inland Empire. Although he will be far from home, Dave is grateful for the support Waste Management has provided to him and his family and knows that his family will be looked after in his absence. We’ll certainly miss him and wish him the best of luck.
