El Sobrante Landfill is a Class 3 regional disposal facility permitted to accept up to 10,000 tons per day, seven days per week. It employs approximately 40 full-time employees. Landfill operations are overseen by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health.

The El Sobrante Landfill has been the focus of various media coverage locally and nationally, but a recent visit by journalist Valentina Martelli brought the landfill onto the international stage. A Los Angeles-based reporter for an Italian television program, Valentina wanted to see how trash can be handled in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. The Italian city of Naples has been facing a trash crisis for almost a year and we are proud that our landfill could serve as a case study on which other countries can model their operations.

Landfill supervisor and Army Reserve Sergeant First Class Dave Hillyer is leaving shortly for a second tour of duty in Iraq. Dave joined El Sobrante in 2001 — shortly after serving 14-and-a-half years on active duty — and has been in the Army Reserves since then.

This will be our 12th year sponsoring Caltrans’ Adopt-A-Highway program. We have been responsible for six miles of the I-15 freeway, starting on the southbound side at Ontario Avenue and ending right before the Temescal Canyon Road exit and starting on the northbound side at Temescal Canyon road, and ending right before Cajalco Avenue.
