El Sobrante Landfill is a Class 3 regional disposal facility permitted to accept up to 10,000 tons per day, seven days per week. It employs approximately 40 full-time employees. Landfill operations are overseen by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health.
This month, the California Climate Action Registry named Waste Management a “Climate Action Leader™.” Waste Management earned this distinction by voluntarily gathering and reporting its greenhouse gas emissions inventory with the organization, of which it is a member.

The California Climate Action Registry is a non-profit private organization started by the State of California to serve as a voluntary greenhouse gas registry to encourage and protect early actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Members of the Registry voluntarily measure, verify, and publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions. Independent third parties verify the results to ensure compliance with Registry protocols and maintain standardization across participants’ industries.

This note of distinction represents six months of internal data gathering of all of greenhouse gas emissions at every single facility, every landfill and every vehicle in California. This is a remarkable achievement for a company as complicated as Waste Management to achieve independent verification of its emissions on its first attempt. This recognition is also a tribute to our staff that worked so hard to complete the submission for 105 of our operations in California.

Waste Management was not only the first solid waste company to join the Registry but it’s also a founding member of The Chicago Climate Exchange.
