El Sobrante Landfill is a Class 3 regional disposal facility permitted to accept up to 10,000 tons per day, seven days per week. It employs approximately 40 full-time employees. Landfill operations are overseen by the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health.

Summer is winding down, but we’ve been extremely busy at the El Sobrante Landfill the last couple of months setting new records in safety and also dealing with a devastating fire in our wildlife preserve.
The safety of our customers and employees is very important at Waste Management and I am proud to share that the employees of the El Sobrante Landfill recently achieved 1,000 work days without a loss-time accident or injury. This is an impressive milestone and we are proud of everyone involved.
Our employees have been working hard in another part of the landfill to help restore the wildlife habitat after a recent fire. Unfortunately, the fire was caused by a motocross driver who trespassed onto the property. A total of 990 acres were destroyed, 172 of which are part of our preserve. Our biologists have come up with a plan to restore the area for the protected animals and species who call the habitat home. But it will be some time before the area is fully restored.
We’re also keeping our biologists and engineers busy with rolling closures at the landfill. You may be surprised to know this, but at any given time, only small portions of the landfill (called cells) are open for trash deposits. Once a cell fills up, it is closed in a manner that protects the surrounding soil, but also allows for native vegetation to grow. This is a complicated process, but it will result in 1,300 acres of protected open space for local residents when the landfill closes in its entirety.
