During the holidays, we generate 25 percent more trash than usual. In fact, between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, we create about 1 million extra tons of waste each week. But we can all take some simple steps to minimize waste this time of the year:
- Buy gifts that don't generate waste such as lottery or concert tickets.
- Buy gifts made out of recycled content. Many toys and gifts are now made with recycled materials. If you are having trouble finding ones you like, ask the store manager to add more choices next year.
- Make your own greeting cards or gift tags using last year's cards, scrap paper, and extra trimmings.
- Wrap creatively! Make your own wrapping paper out of cloth napkins, newspaper or magazines, or from old maps or posters.
- Decorate your home naturally and buy decorations that you can use year after year. Or, paint acorns and pine cones that you find in your yard and keep them for next year.
- Recycle your Christmas tree.
- Find a home for last year's gifts. Did your family outgrow clothes or update sport equipment? Have a yard sale or donate items to charity.
- Don't waste a good party. During your holiday entertaining, use reusable plates, cups, and utensils. Buy food in bulk to prevent extra packaging. Set up recycling bins at the party and let guests know where they are.
- Use reusable bags when you shop. If every household in America reused a bag for just one grocery store trip, we'd save an estimated 60,000 trees.
- Make a New Year's resolution to trim waste in 2008. Make a list of ways you can be more "green" next year.
