Coast Waste Management and Waste Management of North County recently wrapped its four-week Newspaper in Education Program in partnership with the North County Times.

More than 25 classrooms of 4th-9th graders in Carlsbad and Oceanside participated in the environmental education-themed program from Oct. 15 through America Recycles Day, on Nov. 15. Teachers that participated received free weekly deliveries of the North County Times as well as the “Earth Savers” environmental education curriculum developed by Waste Management.

The curriculum is written to state standards and has activities that go along with information in the newspapers to teach students about the environment. So, for example, students read about recycling and then complete a chart about the things they can recycle at home; or they look to find information about businesses in the newspaper and list out what types of wastes and recyclable materials these businesses might generate and how they can be responsible about their disposal. There is also information about energy conservation, material reuse and composting.

“We hope the teachers, students and their families had a fun experience not only learning how to be better environmental stewards, but also in utilizing the newspaper as a great information source for classroom activities,” said Lori Somers, Community and Municipal Relations Representative. “There is much more to reducing, reusing and recycling than putting your cans in the recycling bin or shutting off the water when you brush your teeth – and hopefully the activities through the program will help our local students think of other innovative ways they can protect our earth.”

At the completion of the program, teachers whose classrooms participated were eligible to enter a random drawing to win a gift certificate for the purchase of classroom supplies.
