Everyone at Waste Management's North County office in Oceanside spends a lot of time working with the military and their families. There are lots of logistics to work out, with military families cycling in and out of the area. But the relationship goes much deeper. A number of our current and recent team members dedicated their lives to serving their country before joining the WM team.

“We are so impressed with the training and talent instilled in our employees who have military backgrounds and are proud to call a number of veterans part of our team,” said Ken Ryan, District Manager of Waste Management of North County in Oceanside and Coast Waste Management in Carlsbad.

Not surprisingly, most of these were in the Marine Corps: John Lusignan, who retired as WM’s Oceanside District Manager and remains active with Waste Management in the local community, spent 24 years in the Marine Corps both as an enlisted man and an officer and did two tours of duty in Vietnam (and later spent 17 years as District Manager for Waste Management); Walter Dabbs, Environmental Safety and Compliance Manager, who retired as a Master Sergeant after 20 years, including time in the Gulf War and Somalia; Route Manager Anthony Leak who retired after 20 years and saw action in the Gulf War as a Gunnery Sergeant; Richard Scott, Recycling Center Manager, who retired as a Gunnery Sergeant after 20 years as an engineer and serving in Iraq; Fleet Manager Steve Noble who served 14 years and saw action in the Gulf War; Mike Phillips who served 14 years with action in the Gulf War and who re-enlisted into the Army National Guard in June 2006; six-year vet and Corporal, Aaron Fowler, who is currently a Vehicle Maintenance Technician; Technician Jorge Alatriste who has been enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve since May 2001; and recently retired Senior Account Representative Dennis Merchant, who served for six years and was in Vietnam on an Ordnance Disposal team. There are also a couple of Navy men in the mix: Parts Administrator Forrest Sutphin served in waters off of Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon and the Gulf War before retiring after 21 years as a Petty Officer First Class. Route Manager Dale Whitworth spent four years in the Navy and participated in the evacuation of Grenada.

There are two particular WM employees in North County who have a special place in the hearts of their teammates due to their recent or upcoming overseas service with the military. Part time Vehicle Maintenance Technician Anthony Candelaria is also an Active Duty Camp Pendleton Gunnery Sergeant with 18 years of service to date, spending two years in the Army and 16 years with the Marine Corps, including time in Iraq. He is scheduled to go to Baghdad in August 2007 as the Company Gunnery Sergeant, with service for six months in Baghdad. Vehicle Maintenance Technician Jeffrey Walker spent eight years in the Marine Corps and then signed up for the Army Reserves. He served on active duty with the Army Reserves in Baghdad from May 2005 until June 2006 and returned to work at WM in August of this year.

We are proud of the contributions these employees have made to their country before joining Waste Management, and are also proud to provide service to those at Camp Pendleton who are actively protecting our country today.
