We’ve talked before about how we train our employees about being safe while on the job and the safety milestones celebrated by our facilities, but what is Waste Management doing to protect the total health of our employees?

In addition to offering comprehensive healthcare benefits for our employees and their families, we also provide opportunities at work for our employees to be proactive about their health and wellness. This week, Waste Management of Orange County will host two health screening and awareness events at its facilities in Irvine and Santa Ana. Working in conjunction with CIGNA, Waste Management will provide employees with the opportunity to check their blood pressure, do a “finger stick” to obtain a full lipid panel, receive a body mass index/body fat analysis and participate in health counseling with on-site healthcare professionals. All activities will take place before or at the end of the employees’ workdays on July 18 and 19, and take 20 minutes or less.

In addition, Waste Management of Orange County will be installing one automated external defibrillator (AED) each at its Irvine and Santa Ana facilities in order to provide an immediate response in the event an employee experiences a cardiac emergency. Five people at each site will be trained on the use of the machine. Employees will also soon be receiving a work/home safety guide to help them and their families connect the safety programs they participate in at work to their activities at home, providing an extra measure of protection for them and their loved ones in their off-work hours.

“We know our employees work hard servicing the communities of Orange County every day, so we wanted to provide them with a convenient outlet for obtaining basic information about their health in order to help them be more proactive about staying well,” said David Ross, senior district manager. “We also look forward to having the defibrillators at our facilities as another tool that can assist our employees in an emergency, in addition to the first aid training and CPR certification all of our Orange County managers have.”

We also bring in experts to help our employees learn techniques for good health and safe work practices – such as James Dagostino, Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), PT, who for the past six years has instructed WM drivers in the San Diego/Orange County Market Area on stretching and the best techniques for pushing, pulling and lifting. “Two minutes of stretching in the morning can save you six, eight weeks of agony with an injury,” he says. “I don’t know about you, but I can’t afford to be off of work for six weeks.”

Just like any other employer, Waste Management’s goal is improving the length and quality of life for our most important asset – our employees and their families – and we hope the measures we are taking, with the partnership and support of our employees in these endeavors, will ensure we achieve this goal.
